Synopsis:
Construction is in Julia's blood, so when she is promoted to Project Manager to renovate a turn-of-the-century school house in a bed and breakfast, she has high hopes of proving herself in the male-dominated construction industry.
But Julia discovers there is more to managing a construction project than just contracts and budgets - especially when she meets Matthew Rigo, the demolition contractor who seems bound and determined to cross the lines Julia has imposed.
Vandalism and other unexplainable occurrences beset the project, leading Julia to believe there is much more to the school house than she first realizes. Something is inside the hundred year old school house, and it wants out. Is Julia the key to its release? And are Matthew and Nathan what they appear to be?
My Review:
What a thrill! I couldn't put Fall down, and could never guess what was going to happen next.
I was very intrigued throughout the novel.
The slow pace in the beginning of this novel is quickly followed by thrill, and surprise. I loved the Angel and Demon storyline, mixed with realistic human life. It was such an exciting read!
And, of course, a great novel has to have a love story...or two!
I found many story layers in this book, and enjoyed every one of them.
This novel was outstanding! A novel I would definitely recommend.
Jennifer Hurst has a good writer's voice, and the flow of the novel is perfect. Jennifer has a gift in writing and I find her style to be intoxicating. I will be looking for more of her works, for sure.
Here is a snippet from Fall, that I enjoyed. It's just enough to whet your reader's appetite!
JD stood in the foyer of the great room, taking in the progress of the project. It was so quiet, she could practically hear her heart pulsing in her ears.
She started for the staircase to inspect the upper two levels, when she sensed something on the outer edges of her hearing.
At first, it didn't register as sound to her; it was more like the sense that something wasn't right.
It took her a moment to locate what it was. She stopped, waiting for it, the source of disturbance, and finally hear it.
A ping. A faint metallic ping.
She moved quietly to the back of the building, as the noise became more defined. Metal against metal, she determined- almost like a loose wire tapping against a piece of metal.
Through the kitchen she walked quietly, stopping at the top of the stairs leading to the basement.
A feeling of dread came over her as she hesitated at the top of the stairs.
JD reached out to a dangling string and pulled on it. A bare bulb hanging above the basement steps flared to life. The tapping stopped.
JD strained her ears to catch any other sound. Perhaps it was a rodent.
JD mused and considered switching off the light and turning to what she had been doing.
Her hand stretched out to pull the cord again, but the sound resumed. Could it be another vagrant? Maybe it was rodents.
"Hello?" She called. Maybe the sound of a human voice would scare away whatever was making that noise. The tapping noise stopped for a brief moment, then resumed.
